Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve been asked a lot of questions in the fifteen plus years I’ve been designing and building websites. Here are the most common questions. If your question isn’t here, feel free to contact me and I’ll do my best to answer it.

I’ve never had a website built before, can you help me?

Of course! Get in touch so we can see what stage you’re at in your business, to see if we’re a good fit to work together and if I can help you.

What do I need to do to get started?

It’s always a great help if you have an idea of what you want or expect to achieve with your website and why.

Building a website is a collaborative process, so you’ll also need to be prepared to set aside some time to do some work along the way.

Do I need to have anything else ready?

It can help speed up the process if you have a logo, text and images for the various pages, and any other content ready to go before getting started, but these are not always required to get started.

Let us know what you have and I can help you get it organised.

I already have a website, can you re-design it?

I can do a website audit to determine the current state of your existing website, and some parts might be able to be reused, but I almost always recommend rebuilding a new website from scratch, especially if it’s more than 2-3 years old.

Some things such as page content and the overall structure can be replicated, but it usually takes longer to refresh an old site design than to build a new one.

The best way forward is to contact us to book in a website audit so we can see what we’re working with.

Can you build a website using a design I already have to save time?

It’s possible, but doing it this way takes longer, is more work, and usually costs more.

If the designer is well versed with responsive design and understands the need to be flexible with their designs, it might be an option in some cases.

How long does it take to build a website?

It depends, and in most cases the website is just one piece of the puzzle.

While it’s technically possible to whip up a quick and dirty website in a day, a typical website project will usually last anywhere from 3-6 weeks or longer depending on how complex it is, what kind of functionality you need, and what other services are required.

It will also depend on how quickly you are able to communicate with us and get your content together, whether you need help creating content, and how much time you’re able to dedicate to the process each week.

How much does a website cost?

The cost to design and build a website depends on a lot of things, just like buying a car or building a house, and you get what you pay for.

Before we build anything, we’ll get on a call together, go through your goals and work out an overview for what would be needed to help you achieve your goals, and work out the most suitable package for you and your business.

Factors that will affect your investment include the type and complexity of functionality you need, how quickly you need it done, how much help you need with things like content creation or other services outside of the website itself.

You can get a rough idea of website pricing on the WEBSITE SERVICES page.

Do I need anything else for my website?

In most cases you’ll need at least:

  • A domain name – yourbusinessname.com
    normally a minimum yearly cost
  • Website hosting – the remote server where your website files live
normally a monthly or yearly cost*
  • Email hosting – for you@yourbusinessname.com
normally a monthly cost per email address

*included in website care, see below

Do you use website builders like SquareSpace, Wix, or Shopify?

These are sometimes OK for small sites that don’t need much control over functionality or things like custom website design or SEO. Their monthly cost and nice looking templates can make them appear attractive at first glance.

I’ve found that when you want to do anything slightly more specific or add functionality that isn’t included in the standard packages, their monthly add-ons can start to add up, and then you’re locked into their system which makes moving away a challenge.

I prefer to use WordPress as it’s the most widely used website platform and there are millions of people out there who know how to use it and get support from.

Will you show me how to use my website to update content?

Yes, all website packages include basic website training. Anyone with average computer skills can update text on a web page, or add and edit a blog post with some images. You’ll pick it up in no time!

*This is not to be confused with website software updates and maintenance. Website care and maintenance, and content updates are two different things, see below.

Who will care for my website after it’s built?

Websites are built using software and are hosted on computers that, just like any other computer, can be vulnerable to being hacked due to out of date software or poor configuration.

I offer options for ongoing website maintenance that ensures:

  • The software that makes up your website is up to date so there’s less risk of your site being compromised
  • Offsite backups are in place so that if something goes wrong, there are quick options to get it back up and running
  • Security precautions have been taken to help keep baddies out
  • Everything is running smoothly and performing as best it can so your website visitors can access your site and use it without issues

Website care plans also include website hosting. Take a look at our Website Care packages for more information.

How can I get my site to the top of Google?

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is an ongoing service that requires regular research and consistent content creation to be effective.

All websites I build are search engine friendly using SEO best practices, and are hooked up with third party services as a foundation to get the best results, but I’m not an SEO company.

At a minimum, I recommend regular blogging and making sure you have a good amount of relevant content on your website as a starting point for good search engine results in Google and other search engines.

Do you write the content for my site?

You will need to provide all the content for your website as this is your area of expertise. If you need any advice or guidance to help get this done I’m happy to help.

How should I provide text content?

Text can be provided as plain text file, or a Google, Pages or Word doc.

PDFs, PowerPoint presentations, or scanned documents are not accepted.

Do you supply images for my website?

No. We can provide links to a lot of great stock photo websites where you can often get images for free, or more unique images for a small cost.

Can you help me set up my email addresses?

I can get you set up with Google for email and will send you through all the login details and some basic instructions on how to get started.

I’m not an IT company, so if you’re struggling with getting email set up on your computer, tablet, or phone, my advice is to hire an IT specialist.
